INTRODUÇÃO / INTRODUTION
Os modelos que mais me satisfazem montar são os de transporte de tropas, blindados leves e em especial a família de jeeps.
Nos diversos concursos e exposições de plastimodelismo que tenho participado é muito comum observar vários modelistas fazerem dioramas do Vietnã usando o kit do MUTT da Tamiya ou de outras marcas "direto da caixa", não fazendo as devidas modificações, seja por falta de informação ou talvez por achar impossível esta transformação.
Se analisarmos a primeira hipótese, temos uma não conformidade com o objetivo do plastimodelismo, que prega a utilização de referências para a montagem de modelos mais perfeitos. No segundo caso vai aqui uma receita simples e fácil de se fazer, utilizando basicamente chapas de plasticard e de alumínio. Caso você esteja fazendo ou pretende fazer um diorama ou este modelo na versão usada no Vietnã, tente esta simples conversão que sem dúvida alguma seu trabalho será valorizado.
No meu caso eu usei o kit Tamiya (iten 35125), M151A2 w/ TOW Missile Launcher, mas o que será mostrado aqui é válido para qualquer kit Tamiya do Ford MUTT e também para o kit da Academy.
The most popular models to me, are ATT´s, Light Armoured Cars and in special the jeeps family.
Attending to various models shows and exhibition, is very common to note a lot of fellow modelers doing Vietnam era dioramas using the MUTT kit (Tamiya or other) "straight from the box", without worrying about the differences between the two versions, maybe it´s because a lack of information or to think it´s conversion is an impossible project.
On the first case, I think it´s a nonsense, due to modelling itself, been a conjunction of references use, building, painting, etc., to locate your model as precise as you can. On the second one, here goes a little recipe, using basically, plasticard and aluminum sheets. I´m sure, that if you are building a Vietnam era diorama, try this one and add some value to your work.
In my case, I used the Tamiya kit (iten 35125), M151A1 w/ TOW Missile Launcher,
but what I will tell here, also works for any Tamiya kit of the Ford MUTT, as
well as to the Academy kit.
PASSO A PASSO / STEP BY STEP
Seguindo as instruções devemos começar fechando os buracos embaixo dos assentos com uma chapa de plasticard no formato adequado.
Nesta etapa começamos a fazer as modificações. A tampa traseira, peça A1, devemos cortar as lanternas traseiras porque são do modelo novo. Em seguida cortar a parte de baixo reta, de acordo com TEMPLATE - Fig.4. Na peça A34, cortar a ponta dos pára-lamas dianteiros e fazer um complemento seguindo o TEMPLATE - Fig.1 e Fig.3. Nas laterais (peças A2 e A4), cortar as alças para transporte e fazer uma linha reta no final do pára-lama traseiro conforme o TEMPLATE - Fig.3, o final do pára-lama traseiro deve coincidir com a modificação na peça A1. Devemos aproveitar para cortar as pontas do pára-choque dianteiro na peça A34.
Follow the instructions, just close the holes under the seats with plasticard on the right shape.
In this step we going to start the first surgery. On part A1, we should cut
off the rear signaling lights, because they are specific for updateds
vehicles. Following we should cut off the lower portion of part A1,
according with TEMPLATE - Fig.4. On the part A34 we should cut off the ends
of the front bumper, as we going to replace it later, and also cut off the
ends of the front fenders, as shown in TEMPLATE - Fig.1 and Fig.3, we have
to make new ends using the dimensions given on TEMPLATE - Fig.3. On the side
panels (A2 and A4) cut off the lift hooks and an straight line on the rear
end of the rear fender, as shown on TEMPLATE - Fig.3, the end of the fender
must match with the corrected part A1.
Montar direto como indicado, a única modificação será colocar as alças de transporte do lado de dentro das peças A15, coladas na peça A1. Aproveita-se para fazer um furo na ponta do escapamento (B27).
Here, we go straight forward, the only work we must to do is to put the lift
hooks on the center of parts A15, glued on A1. We also should make a hole on
the end of part B27.
Nesta etapa nós devemos fazer a montagem e o detalhamento do rádio, de acordo com as referências.
On this step we should build and detail the radio set according with the references.
Nesta etapa nós não usaremos as seguintes peças: B31, B34 (substituir por tira de alumínio), C7, C25, C28 e a base. Devemos detalhar o farol de blackout B35 fazendo a fiação elétrica. A peça B4 é separada para ser colocada ao final da pintura do veículo. Também iremos fazer as setas dianteiras com pedaços de sprue, conforme TEMPLATE - Fig.7 e Fig.8.
On this we don´t use the following parts: B31, B34 (replaced with thin strap of aluminium foil), C7, C25, C28 and the base. We must detail the blackout light with it´s electrical wiring. The part B4 is separated to be used after the model painting. We also have to do the signal front lights from a piece of sprue, as shown on TEMPLATE - Fig.7 and Fig.8.
Não usaremos as seguintes peças: C3 e C5. Devemos fazer um par das peças B18 + B19, colocar o rádio no banco lateral do veículo. Na peça A17 cortamos a grade por trás e colocamos uma tela fina.
We don´t use the following parts: C3 and C5. We should make 2 sets of B18 and B19, put the radio set on the rear side seat of the vehicle. On part A17 we cut off the grille behind and replace it by an squared screen.
PÁRA-BRISAS / FRONT WINDOW
Devemos fazer uma separação no meio do pára-brisa como no TEMPLATE - Fig.9, não usaremos as peças: A7, C1 e C6. No lugar da peça C1 usaremos a peça C3, devemos corrigir o volante A10, pois no modelo antigo os raios do arco são arredondados, semelhante aos jeeps MB da Segunda Guerra Mundial, na barra A11 devemos fazer a alavanca das setas de direção.

We should make a separation bar on the middle of the front window as shown on TEMPLATE - Fig.9, we didn´t use the parts: A7. C1 e C6. We should replace the part C1 by the C3, we also have to correct the steering wheel A10, because this model should have a steering wheel more or less like the old MB jeeps from the WWII, on the steering bar A11 we should make the signaling switch.
Primeiramente devemos tampar o buraco existente no capô A18 que serve para o dispositivo "Snorkel". Colar o pára-brisas na posição desejada, colar o espelho retrovisor, devemos reservar a peça C20 para ser colocada após a pintura do modelo. Agora iremos fazer o pára-choques dianteiro cortando em uma folha de alumínio e usando o TEMPLATE - Fig.2, após colarmos devemos colocar as alças A9
Start by closing the hole on the part A18, this is to be used with the "Snorkel" system. Attach the front window as we like, fix the rear mirror, we should keep the part C20 to be putted after the model painting. Now we going to build the front bumper cutting on an aluminium foil following the TEMPLATE - Fig.2, then put the parts A9 as indicated.
Eu não fiz essa montagem porque não era usada na época do conflito do Vietnã. Também pulei a montagem das sequências 9 e 10 do folheto de instruções.
I didn´t make this, because it wasn´t used during the Vietnam conflict. I also skip the steps 9 and 10 on the instructions sheets.
Devemos repor as lanternas traseiras que retiramos no passo 1 por outras do modelo antigo. No meu caso eu utilizei as lanternas que acompanham a carreta reboque do jeep MB da Segunda Guerra Mundial da Italeri, apenas fure um buraco do diâmetro adequado e encaixe as lanternas. O MUTT da Tamiya que vem com a carreta também trás essas lanternas do modelo antigo.
We should replace the brake lights we have tooked off on the step 1 by others from the old style. On my case I used the ones that come with the towing trailler of the Italeri MB jeep, just make a hole with the correct diametre and glue it on place. The Tamiya MUTT with trailler also have this old style brake lights.

Para pintura eu usei tintas Tamiya XF-58 Flat Olive Green, como é observado nas referências é comum não apresentarem as estrelas brancas no capô e apenas o registro nas laterais do capô. O modelo foi envelhecido com pincel seco e giz pastel. Foi colocado vários acessórios e também uma metralhadora 7,62mm M60.
Este foi meu terceiro modelo de um veículo militar e se houvesse sido feit hoje em dia talvez o resultado tivesse sido melhor, porém podemos ver como essa transformação é simples.
For overall painting I used Tamiya acrylics XF-58 Flat Olive Green, as indicated on my references I didn´t put the white star over the hood, but I applied the register on the hood sides. The model was weathered using drybrushing and dry pastel chalks. I also used a lot of accesories from my spare parts box and a M60 7,62mm machine gun.
This was my third effort in building a military vehicle and if it was made nowadays I think it probably could be better, but as we can see this is indeed a very simple transformation.
